Hydrating Complex 5% Serum vs 10% Moisturiser: You Need Both, Not Either

The Hydrating Complex 5% Serum and the Hydrating Complex 10% Moisturiser are not two options you pick between. They're designed to be used together, in that order, every day. The serum delivers water-binding actives deep into damp skin, the moisturiser seals that water in and adds a lightweight occlusive layer on top. Used on its own, either one does half a job. Used together, you get hydration that actually stays put, without the heavy, greasy finish a single rich cream leaves behind.

Why the percentages confuse people

When people see "5%" and "10%" next to each other, the instinct is to assume the 10% is the stronger, better version and the 5% is a lighter starter product. That's not what's happening here. The percentage refers to the concentration of the hydrating complex in each formula, not the intensity of the result, and a serum and a moisturiser are built to do completely different jobs in your routine regardless of their numbers.

A serum is a thin, fast-absorbing carrier designed to get actives past the surface of the skin quickly. A moisturiser is a thicker, emulsified formula designed to sit on top of the skin and slow down water loss. Comparing them by percentage alone is like comparing a watering can to a greenhouse roof. They're not competing for the same job, they're two different steps that only work properly in sequence.

What the 5% serum actually does

The Hydrating Complex 5% + Hyaluronic Acid Serum is 98% natural ingredients. Its job is to draw water into the surface layers of the skin and hold onto it there, using hyaluronic acid's ability to bind many times its weight in water. Applied to damp skin, it absorbs fast and leaves skin feeling plumper almost immediately, that's the point of putting it first.

In our independent consumer questionnaire, 100% of participants saw a visible improvement in skin after one use, 100% agreed their skin felt softer and smoother, and 100% agreed their skin looked better without makeup after two weeks of use.

What it doesn't do on its own is stop that water from evaporating again. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, it attracts moisture, but without something on top to lock it in, especially in dry air or wind, that moisture can pull back out of the skin over the course of the day. That's where the moisturiser comes in.

What the 10% moisturiser adds

The Hydrating Complex 10% + Hyaluronic Acid Moisturiser is a lightweight daily formula built to go on after the serum, not instead of it. It's not a heavier, more concentrated version of the same product, it's the sealing step. Applied over the serum while skin is still slightly damp from that first layer, it forms a light barrier that slows down water loss and keeps the hydration the serum delivered from evaporating straight back out.

Because it's formulated to be lightweight rather than rich, it doesn't sit heavily on the skin or feel greasy under makeup or sunscreen the way a dense cream can. That's a deliberate choice. A single heavy, occlusive-forward moisturiser can hydrate well, but it tends to feel like too much as soon as the weather turns warm.

Why two light layers beat one heavy step, especially now

September through November is spring in South Africa, and by October the UV index climbs fast and the days get properly warm. Skin behaves differently in warmer, more humid air than it does in the dry cold of winter, and the hydration approach that felt right in June can start to feel wrong by October.

In cold, dry conditions, skin loses water quickly and a thicker, more occlusive moisturiser earns its place because it's fighting a drier environment. In warmer months, skin's own oil production tends to pick up and the air itself holds more moisture, so a heavy cream on top of already-active skin can feel congested, sit greasy by midday, or make skin feel like it needs blotting by the afternoon.

Splitting hydration into two lighter layers solves this without cutting hydration back. The serum still delivers the water-binding actives skin needs. The lightweight moisturiser still seals it in. But because each step is thinner than one rich all-in-one cream, the combined layer feels lighter on the skin, sits better under sunscreen, and doesn't fight against skin that's already producing more of its own oil as the temperature rises. You get the same result with less weight sitting on your face, which matters a lot more once tank top season starts and you're spending more time in the sun.

How to layer them properly

  1. Cleanse with a gentle, non-stripping cleanser, like the Oat Cleansing Gel, and pat skin so it's still slightly damp, not bone dry.
  2. Apply 3 to 4 drops of the Hydrating Complex 5% Serum to damp skin. Press it in with your palms rather than rubbing.
  3. Wait about 30 seconds to let it absorb.
  4. Apply the Hydrating Complex 10% Moisturiser over the top while skin still feels slightly tacky from the serum. This is what locks the hydration in.
  5. In the morning, follow with SPF once the moisturiser has settled, especially as UV levels rise into spring.
  6. Repeat morning and evening. Consistency matters more than the amount you apply at once.

FAQ

Can I use just the serum and skip the moisturiser?

You can, and you'll still get plumper, softer feeling skin in the short term based on our consumer questionnaire results above. But without a sealing layer on top, that hydration doesn't last as long, particularly if you're in air conditioning, wind, or dry heat for most of the day. The moisturiser is what keeps the effect going.

Can I use just the moisturiser and skip the serum?

You can, but you're skipping the step that actively draws water into the skin in the first place. The moisturiser is designed to seal in what the serum delivers, applying it alone still hydrates and feels pleasant, it just isn't doing the full job the two-step system is built for.

Is the moisturiser just a stronger version of the serum?

No. The 10% and 5% refer to the concentration of the hydrating complex within each specific formula, not a strength scale between the two products. They're formulated for different textures and different jobs, a fast-absorbing serum and a lightweight sealing moisturiser, and they're meant to be read that way rather than as low dose versus high dose.

Will this feel too heavy in summer?

That's the point of the pairing. Two light layers feel lighter on skin than one rich, heavy cream, because each individual step is thinner. If you find you still want less as the weather gets properly hot, you can use the serum alone in the mornings and layer both at night.

Can I use this with actives like niacinamide or vitamin C?

Yes. Apply your treatment serum first, such as the Niacinamide 10% + Rice Water Serum or Vitamin C 5% Serum, then the Hydrating Complex 5% Serum, then finish with the 10% Moisturiser to seal everything in. The hydrating step works well as a finishing layer over most other actives.
